Buckinghamshire

Buckinghamshire is a ceremonial and non-metropolitan home county in South East England. The county town is Aylesbury and the largest town in ceremonial Buckinghamshire is Milton Keynes. The county includes two of the three longest rivers in England. The River Thames forms the southern boundary with Berkshire, which has crept over the border at Eton and Slough meaning the river is no longer the sole boundary between the two counties. The River Great Ouse begins just outside the county in Northamptonshire and flows east through Buckingham, Milton Keynes and Olney. Buckinghamshire is well served by the motorway network, with the M40 and M1 running parallel to the county and the M25 London orbital motorway passing through the south of the county. The A41 trunk road links the heart of the county to central London in under an hour.

Buckinghamshire is a county packed with potential for families. There is an extensive range of attractions and activities on offer that can make any day or weekend visit interesting, educational and most important ... fun! Buckinghamshire Railway Centre is a working steam museum where you can step back in time as you stroll amongst the giants of the steam age displayed at its spacious 25 acre site. Buckinghamshire is fortunate in being one of the English counties with the highest number of National Trust properties open to the public. In the county 13 houses, mills and monuments are open, some of them all year round. The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre is in the village of Great Missenden, which was the home of the childrens and short story writer Roald Dahl for 36 years until his death in 1990. The museum houses all of Dahls main papers: his manuscripts, business and personal correspondence and his Ideas Book. It also offers regular workshops and hosts events that help to enhance creativity and writing skills. It is run by an independent charity. In 2008 the museum won the "Best Small Visitor Attraction" from Enjoy England, the countrys official tourist board.
